Oschgood Schlatters
What is it?
Pain that occurs from the pulling of the patella tendon on the bony attachment site during rapid growth spurts. It is usually associated with sports that involve a lot of running and jumping. (Rugby, football, gymnastics etc.)
Signs and symptoms?
- Pain below the knee when exercising
- Pain and increased size of bony point under knee
- Swelling
- Pain when going up or down stairs
- Limping
How to treat it?
Icing can help manage pain
Stretching or massage of quads usually helps
Strengthening and rectifying any biomechanical issues is important.
Condition
Severs
What is it?
Heel pain that comes on during growth spirts. Often associated with pain during or after activity.
Signs and symptoms?
- Activity related pain
- Localised tenderness and possible swelling at the back of the heel
- Calves may be quite tight
How to treat it?
- Icing can help manage pain
- A heel raise can be inserted to help offload the achilles
- Stretching of the calf muscle can help
- Any biomechanical issues should be corrected
- Strength exercises for the lower limb is advised
- Progress return to play as symptoms permit
Condition
Hypermobility
What is it?
Changes to connective tissue surrounding the joints leading to larger than normal range of motion.
This can be diagnosed as hypermobility syndrome or it can be part of Ehlers Danos Syndrome, which inherited disorder.

Signs and symptoms?
- Pain and stiffness in joints
- Recurrent sprains and strains
- Can sublux or dislocate joints easily
- Poor balance and co-ordination
- Skin changes
- Fatigue
- Bladder or bowel problems
- Diagnosis: Mostly from our subjective assessment Use of the Beighton score is a useful objective indicator of Hypermobility
How to treat it?
- Physiotherapy
- Strengthening program to help control all ranges of motion available.
- Aerobic training improve fitness and exercise capacity
